The Life and Times of a Tankie from Lincolnshire in the Great War including a short history of the Tank
John C Allen

Cyril Sheldon Allen was amongst the first group of men to crew a new armoured mechanical fighting machine that we now know as the Tank.

The year was 1916 on the sodden battlefield of the Somme, and the Tank weighing some 27 tons, was a comparatively untested fighting machine with faults and weaknesses.

During the Third Battle of Ypres on 4th October 1917, which again was on heavily sodden enemy shelled ground, the Tank was at a disadvantage due to its weight.

Cyril was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for “grit and determination under heavy fire”, for his actions, which went beyond the call of normal duty.

The Tank eventually proved its worth during the Battle of Cambrai, fighting on hardened chalk based strata.

This book relates Cyril`s background and that of the Tank written by his Great Nephew who has inherited his war service medals and other memorabilia.
